Like Lizzo.

May 09, 2023

I’m pathetic.

No one trusts me or values me.

I have to suck it up.

I need to just shut up.

I should just get out of the way.

I should’ve been able to get that done.

I’m too much for them.

I’m not good enough for them.

I don’t deserve it.

Sound familiar? Does your inner critic keep you up at night, too?

If you have a human brain then you have an inner critic, whose tapes have been playing in your head on repeat for a VERY LONG TIME. When you take a close look, you can begin to see how this soundtrack might hold you back from living a bigger, bolder, more effortless version of yourself.

Don’t believe us? Take Lizzo. Have you seen her documentary on HBO Max?

Lizzo is big, bold energy - plus-sized. She’s an amazing vocalist, plays the flute and shows a lot of skin. When she first started out, the world around her told her there wasn’t a place for a “fat black woman rapping and playing the flute in small clothes on stage.” And she believed them. For years.

And then she decided to question it all. She realized she could live life hating on herself and her body, arguing with reality and staying stuck where she was, or she could do the work to accept herself and her unconventional body size, to learn to like herself more along the way to making her dreams come true.

And now we have Lizzo. Three-time Grammy Award-Winner, People’s Choice Award Winner, NAACP Image Award nominee, the list goes on.

But while self-acceptance goes a long way and her success is undeniable, Lizzo still feels doubt (she shows us this in her film).

And it’s the same for all of us - our inner critic will never go away. But when it chimes in we always have a choice: to believe it or say no-thank-you.

Like driving a car that’s out of alignment, your brain wants to pull you left, to tell you stories that aren’t “true,” to keep you in the cave. You’re too much, or You’re not enough.

It’s up to you to call BS here, to self-correct and to steer the car back into alignment. To tell yourself why the opposite is true: that you’re actually pretty kickass, if you do say so yourself. Over and over again. Time and time again.

Six months of coaching with us won’t make you Lizzo. But it will show you how to self-correct and steer yourself out of self-doubt and insecurity so you can actually enjoy the life you work so hard to create.
